2009 PLTW Summer Training Institutes (STI)

June 14-26 - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- Gateway to Technology (GTT) Middle School program
- Introduction to Engineering Design (IED)
- Principles of Engineering (POE)

July 19 - 31 - University of Illinois at Chicago
- Digital Electronics (DE)
- Principles of Engineering (POE)

August 2 - 6 - University of Illinois at Chicago
- Digital Electronics Level 2 (DE)

Registration fee:  $2,200 per teacher (schools will be billed) ; DE Level 2 fee is $1,000 per teacher.      

Urbana-Champaign Campus Housing/Parking: Housing cost at area hotels with PLTW STI blocks are $100-112 per night, includes continental breakfast. Parking passes are $90. Schools pay for hotel directly. Schools will be billed for parking passes. Registration cost includes opening Sunday lunch and dinner, M-F lunches, and 1-2 extra dinners. Snacks, beverages provided.

Chicago Campus Housing/Parking: dorm/condo: Training held at the Chicago campus. Housing cost is $630 for a dorm/condo for two weeks plus $85 parking passes (optional). Schools will be billed for both. Details will be provided when teacher register. Registration cost includes opening Sunday lunch and dinner, M-F breakfast and lunches, and 1-2 extra dinners. Snacks, beverages provided. DE Level 2 housing cost is $220 plus $50 parking.

  • In order to register:
    • In order to register for any Summer Training Institute, your school must have submitted signed school agreement to Project Lead The Way, Inc and you must be a registered PLTW teacher.  New teachers may be invited by official District Delegate to attach to a school record. Refer to www.pltw.org/Engineering/Professional-Development/Teacher-Professional-Development.cfm ; once you receive invitation to register you will be able to log in.
    • In order to register for an STI, you must also first take the pre-assessment for the PTLW course you will be attending this summer. You will find the pre-assessments on the PTLW Virtual Academy, after logging in as a registered teacher, at www.pltw.org/moodle/course/view.php?id=87 .
    • When you have completed the pre-assessment with a score of 75% you will be able to register for training, on the teacher console under Professional Development.  Registration for STI training sessions will open on March 16th.
    • Illinois teachers must attend Illinois STI locations for courses offered in-state (GTT, DE, IED, POE for 2009) unless special conflict permission is granted.
    • Illinois teachers wishing to enroll in other PLTW STI courses not offered by Illinois should consult with Affiliate Director Brenda Pacey for assistance.
    • After national online STI registration is entered, schools/teachers will receive an Authorization to Attend Summer Training Form from Illinois PLTW to completed and returned in order to finalize your registration and to arrange for invoicing.
    • Teachers MUST bring a laptop computer which meets specifications found in the Guidelines section of the online PLTW Purchase Manual.
    • Teachers must arrive to campus by late morning of the first Sunday of each STI, so that institute technology staff can load course software on your computer and so that you can attend important information sessions.
    • Registered teachers will receive frequent email and mail communication during spring and early summer, with schedule and local arrangements details.

Continuing Education or Graduate Credit for Summer Training

-Illinois teachers are eligible to receive up to 80 CPDU’s (contact hours) professional development recognition for participation. Contact hour documentation will be provided for teachers from other states.

-Graduate credit is available for additional related Fall 2009 coursework and tuition payment. Details are available at each STI course link listed above.
