Building Education Partnerships for Illinois' Future Workforce:
Strengthening Math and Science Preparation
High Technology School-to-Work Program and Project Lead The Way (PLTW)
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) are working together to expand opportunities for students to pursue engineering and related advance manufacturing careers by strengthening their math, science and technical skill preparation. DCEO's High Technology School-to-Work Program provides funding to industry-school partnerships to prepare students for high technology careers. This program is promoting the expansion of Project Lead The Way Inc. (PLTW) throughout Illinois in cooperation with the Illinois State Board of Education and the University of Illinois.
PLTW is a nationally recognized program that builds public-private partnerships between schools, colleges and universities and the private sector to increase the quantity and quality of engineers and engineering technologists. The PLTW curriculum is a four-year, flexible sequence of pre-engineering courses that, when combined with college preparatory mathematics and science courses in high school, introduces students to the scope, rigor, and discipline of engineering and engineering technology prior to entering college. The specific courses are Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Civil Engineering and Architecture, Biotechnical Engineering, and Engineering Design and Development.
The University of Illinois became a PLTW National Affiliate Training Center in 2005 and provides professional development and training to teachers.
